- I've done this since I was a child,” Theresa Williamson said as she grooms Rex at the Jazz ‘M Up Pet Salon in Pell City.
Near the end of last week, Theresa Williamson and Susan Meredith found it hard to believe that the Jazz ‘M Up Pet Salon had only opened a few days before.

“It seems like we’ve been here forever,” Meredith said.
“I know,” Williamson replied. “We’ve been having so much fun.”
The full-service salon is located at 1607 Martin Street South, Suite 3, in Pell City, where it offers grooming, overnight boarding, flea treatments, skin treatments, pedicures, teeth scaling, and half-hour do-it-yourself bathing in its walk-in tub. Appointments may be scheduled by calling 884-PETS (7387), and a grand opening is scheduled for the fall.
Specialty shampoo and other grooming accessories are available for sale, and onsite Apple TV equipment allows owners to have photographs taken of their pets.
Williamson owns the salon, and Meredith serves as office manager. The two grew up together in Selma, where Williamson learned her dog grooming skills, but they lost touch for 30 years before reconnecting on Facebook.
“I always told her she should own her own place someday,” Meredith said. “When we got back together, we decided we needed to work on that. It took four years, but all the doors finally opened, and everything fell into place. God definitely worked it all out.”
Williamson, who has also lived in Birmingham and Gadsden before she and her husband settled in Pell City, worked at Cropwell Animal Hospital for 17 years. “I had never thought I would open my own shop, but once we decided to do it, it was a quick thing. We got the building all prepared in two weeks.”
The salon is named for Jazz, Williamson’s five-year-old toy poodle, who lounged nearby on his pillow as she worked. “Everybody wants to look just like Jazz,” she said.
