Cancer prevention study

American Cancer Society (ACS) poses the question, “What if you could prevent even one family from hearing the words, ‘You have cancer’?”
Continuing the fight against cancer, ACS is opening its Cancer Prevention Study-3 (CPS-3) enrollment to the Greater Birmingham area.
Enrollment for Greater Birmingham will be conducted starting Wednesday, August 22 through Wednesday, August 29 at area YMCAs, the Levite Jewish Community Center and Birmingham’s Crossplex location.
In 2012 the ACS guesstimates over 26,000 Alabamians will be diagnosed with cancer. Out of those 26,000, approximately 10,300 will lose their battle.
The CPS-3 has been put together in order to help researchers “better understand the lifestyle, environmental and genetic factors that cause or prevent cancer.”
Interested parties need to be between the ages of 30 and 65 and cancer free (with the exception of non-melanoma skin cancers).
Supporters of CPS-3 are receiving accolades from community members.
“The Levite Jewish Community Center is excited and proud to be a host site for the American Cancer Society’s CPS-3 study. As a community center and a place where we promote wellness of mind, body and spirit, the Cancer Prevention Study fits perfectly with our mission,” said Mindy Cohen, Director of Adult and Senior Programming at the Levite Jewish Community Center.
Vice President of YMCA Michelle Oliver added, “This research clearly aligns with the YMCA vision to lead our community to become the healthiest in America. It will provide meaningful data to guide our thinking as we work to create tomorrow’s breakthroughs in cancer care and treatment.”
“CPS-3 will help us better understand what factors cause cancer, and once we know that, we can be better equipped to prevent cancer,” says principal investigator  Dr. Alpa Patel. “Our previous cancer prevention studies have been instrumental in helping us identify some of the major factors that can affect cancer risk. CPS-3 holds the best hope of identifying new and emerging cancer risks, and we can only do this if members of the community are willing to become involved.”
Potential participants are encouraged to learn more about enrolling in CPS-3 by visiting www.cps3birmingham.org, emailing eps3@cancer.org or calling 1-888-604-5888.
Patel said, “We’re looking for more like-minded individuals in Birmingham to join this effort that we know will save lives and improve the outlook for future generations.”
