Fresh produce, mason jarred jams and numerous delectable edibles lined Sixth Street in historic downtown Leeds at the Farmers Market.
An annual summer tradition every Friday, now through August 31, vendors brave the heat to offer consumers the chance to buy local.
Hometown farmers were on hand representing Miller Farms who offer organic and biodynamic produce.
Specializing in heirloom tomatoes, Miller Farms also offered cantaloupes with price points ranging from $2 to $3 each for small and large melons.
In operation for over 50 years, Miller Farms is moving on from being a turkey and chicken farm to vegetables.
“We have over 40 acres and are aiming to be self sufficient,” said Tina Miller.
Joey Melvin was on hand representing his brother’s business Southern Oaks Farms. A farm in Argo, their slogan is, “Buy local. Buy fresh.”
Former Moody business Minnie’s Bakery baker Susan Mills was on hand with her homemade goodies. Lemon pound cake, banana nut bread, orange crumb cake, focaccia, cheddar and white breads can be purchased at their booth.
“My grandmother taught me how to make all these recipes,” said Mills.
Baking specifically for the Farmers Market and custom orders, Minnie’s Bakery is still open for business by calling Mills at 205-629-5905.
Farmers Market patron and Leeds resident Patricia Noel loves Fridays on Sixth Street.
“I hyperventilate when I get around veggies and fruit. Everything’s so fresh,” said Noel. “Yum.”
Patti Gaines with Alabama Partners for Clean Air set up a booth to educate people on air quality.
While neighboring farmers from nearby areas such as Smitherman Farms and Chilton County Peaches, Plums, Nectarines featured homemade honey and jellies.
Summertime means Leeds Farmers Market. Stop by Fridays from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. to grab some ingredients for your weekend grill out.
