Moody’s Katie Brown had one hit on two at bats, batting in one run and scoring another, in the second half of the AHSAA All-Star softball doubleheader Tuesday.

The soon-to-be senior’s efforts weren’t enough, however, to save the North team from a 7-5 defeat, after a scoreless tie with the South team in the first game.
“It was exciting to be among the best of the best,” Brown said. “Meagan Young got to play in the game last year, and it was exciting to see her go. It made me want to be a part of it.”
In the third inning of the second game, Brown singled to right for an RBI, advancing to second on the throw. She advanced to third on the following play and scored on an error. South’s lead had been cut to one run by the end of the inning, but it went back by another run late in the game.
Brown has been part of the Lady Blue Devils softball program she was a seventh grader and also currently plays with Carolina Elite. She played first base in Tuesday’s all-star game and also plays third, but “I’m going to college to be a pitcher.” She plans to sign with Presbyterian College in Clinton, S.C., this fall.
The daughter of Mike and Brenda Brown, she’s played softball since she was 8. “I like the competitiveness, and I like being around my teammates. The hard work every day at practice is tough, and you never get a break all season, but I love it. It drives you to be better.”
Moody advanced to the region tournament last season after finishing as Class 5A’s state runner-up the year before. The team’s growing success comes with a certain degree of anxiety, Brown said as she anticipates her senior season.
“There’s a ton of pressure. We feel it every day. Our coach, the school, and other sports in school all expect a lot of us.”
