Cooking with JFL: Milkshaken, not stirred

- With fresh, in-season ingredients, these two cool treats are guaranteed to please.
There’s nothing so wholly American, and just plain delicious, as a frosty shake.
Sure they are guilty pleasures, but what is life without a dab of ice creamy goodness.
Freshness and quality are the most important ingredients in a good shake. Fresh berries, whipped cream, and quality ice cream without artificial flavors and alien freeze dried mix-in chunks should be on your list.
It’s also important to have a good blender and a bit of crushed ice on hand to keep that shake extra cold.
While the shakes below may be made to tickle adult taste buds, they taste awesome without the alcohol, too.
Rest assured, the booze is purely optional, so even the kiddies can get in on the fun.
Pop’s Special
Ingredients
8 oz pistachio gelato
4 oz pistachio pudding
1 oz Frangelico (Optional)
1 ½ oz Vodka (Optional)
Garnish: whipped cream, chopped pistachios or pistachio praline brittle
Combine ingredients in blender with a half cup of crushed ice and combine on high. Pour into a tall glass, and garnish. I prefer the unsalted pistachios with this shake for topping. If making a Virgin version add two or three tablespoons of milk instead.
Mudslide Milkshake
Ingredients
2 oz heavy cream
4 oz chocolate ice cream
2 oz vodka
2 oz coffee liqueur
2 oz irish cream
Garnish: cocoa powder, whipped cream
Combine ingredients in a blender with a 1/4 cup of crushed ice and blend until frothy and homogenous. Top with whipped cream, dust with cocoa, and serve.
Kid Friendly Slide: Mix in a bit of Torani Irish Cream syrup or flavored coffee creamer. And a tablespoon of chilled decaf coffee. And for Pete’s sake omit the booze.
Royale
Ingredients
8 oz vanilla gelato
4 oz fresh strained blackberry juice
1 oz cream cheese
2 oz milk
1 oz blackberry brandy
1 oz triple sec (Optional)
½ oz cognac (Optional)
Garnish: whipped cream and three blackberries
Combine ingredients inside a blender with a ½ of a cup of crushed ice. Blend until smooth and pour into a parfait or tall glass top with whipped cream and blackberries. Makes 1 to 2 servings depending on the glass.
Blackberry Juice: Puree fresh berries in a blender. Then wring out the puree in cheesecloth to strain out the seeds. If the seeds don’t bother you then feel free to just use the puree!
Toast Uncle Sam again this weekend with a frosty shake. You may have to declare independence from your diet, but you’ll get a firework display of flavor in your mouth. Well, I’m out of corny stereotypes. Cheers!
