Leeds senior center may shut down because of low attendance

At a recent Leeds City Council meeting the council and residents learned the Leeds’ senior citizens center is in jeopardy of shutting down.
In order for this state-funding center to continue, it needs one thing—attendance.
Lately the center has seen record lows in people joining in the Leeds Senior Center’s daily activities.
Mayor Eric Patterson asked council members to help form a committee to help spread the word in order to increase the senior center’s participation.
“We really don’t want to lose this program,” said Patterson. “If our numbers aren’t up soon we could be in jeopardy of losing the senior center—forever.”
The state requires a minimum of 25 attendees per day. Currently the center is only bringing in approximately 15 people a day.
Leeds Senior Center is open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 12: 30 p.m. and serves a hot lunch at 11:30 a.m. Activities such as group exercise on Mondays and Wednesdays as well as field trips and games are a part of the program.
Those interested in forming a committee to help keep the Leeds Senior Center running should call Leeds City Hall at 205-699-0900.
“This is critical,” said Patterson.
