North St. Clair Relay growing

Jaime Duggan has five family members who have been diagnosed with cancer.  Four of them are survivors.

“That’s what got me started.” Duggan said.  “I relay for them.”

Duggan serves as this year’s Relay for Life of North St. Clair.  The North St. Clair Relay covers all of St. Clair County except for Moody and Pell City.  Duggan says the relay is young, but it continues to grow.

Last year the North St. Clair Relay raised $25,000 for the American Cancer Society. This year Duggan hopes the North St. Clair will exceed a fundraising goal of $30,000.  The North St. Clair Relay has been around for five years, and there are 10 teams signed up for this year’s event so far.

Festivities begin at 6 p.m. on May 4 and continue throughout the night until 6 a.m. on May 5 at the Springville High School football field.  Participants will be able to take part in a Luminaria Ceremony at night fall to honor those diagnosed with cancer, a balloon release at midnight, talent contest and scavenger hunt.  A stage will also be set up for entertainment.  And this year’s theme is movies.

“We’re going to make it as spicy and as lively as possible,” Mike Tonguette, the activities and entertainment chair said.  “The relay gives people a chance to come out and support something that affects us all in some way.”

Duggan and Tonguette are still asking for volunteers to assist them and encourage everyone to participate in the relay.  If you would like to get involved, visit the website: relay4life.org/stclair and find the link to the relay’s Facebook page.  Contact Jaime Duggan: jaimeduggan@windstream.net
