The seat was left vacant this summer after the death of Representative Owen Drake of Leeds. Three Republican candidates originally ran for the nomination, but as no one received a majority vote in the primary election held in September, a run-off election was held Tuesday between Tommy Joe Alexander and Dickie Drake, who is the brother of the late Rep. Owen Drake.
“It’s humbling to have received the Republican nomination from the voters in District 45, but now we turn our efforts and energy to the November 29th general election,” stated Drake. “It’s crucial to return a true fiscal conservative to the seat previously held by my late brother, Owen Drake.
“The election is about keeping and expanding our job base and getting our economy back on track, something that can only be done through less spending, lower taxes, and decreased regulation,” Drake further commented. “These job-boosting solutions of mine are in direct opposition to what Paige Parnell, the Democrat Party and its leader, President Obama, believe. Therefore, the choice for voters in District 45 is stark – create jobs with Republican Dickie Drake or further stifle economic growth with Democrat Paige Parnell.”
Drake, a business owner in Leeds, won the run-off election with approximately 53 1/2% of the vote according to unofficial results.
“I offer my congratulations to Dickie for a well-fought race. The Alabama Republican Party is looking forward to putting our resources behind Dickie and making sure that seat remains in Republican hands,” stated Bill Armistead, Chairman of the Alabama Republican Party.
“According to Democrat Chairman Mark Kennedy, Obama’s Organizing for America has already committed to helping the Democrat nominee and it’s vitally important for Republicans across Alabama to join together to stop Obama in his tracks,” continued Armistead.

“Anyone who partners with Obama and his liberal agenda is wrong for Alabama and wrong for House District 45,” Armistead stated. “I know many of the voters in that district and they know that more government, more taxes and more regulation are not the answer to the issues facing our state. Obama’s job-killing policies have stalled America’s economy and the last thing we need is for someone to try and introduce those same failed policies in Montgomery.” Chris Brown, Chairman of the Jefferson County Republican Party echoed Chairman Armistead’s sentiments and offered his congratulations to Alexander. “Jefferson County Republicans are excited and ready to go to work to ensure victory on November 29.”
The new St. Clair County Republican Party Chairman Freddie Turrentine also pledged his support to helping Drake. “We look forward to working with Dickie and doing what it takes to make sure he is victorious in November.”
