As the Kurly Q’s Square Dancing Club celebrates their 39th anniversary they look forward to increasing membership and sharing their love for square dancing with others.

Ronnie Purser, who has been calling square dances for 43 years, said, “The theme of square dancing is friendship set to music.”

With 12 to 15 active members, The Kurly Q’s often showcase their moves at exhibitions when they meet every second and fourth Saturday of the month at Purser Ray Hall, located at Odenville Middle School.

Dance club member, Fred Lucas, said, “Once you learn the moves it starts to come easy to you.”

Square dancing is made up of approximately 175 dance moves the Kurly Q’s spend time rehearsing.  The group offers lessons that are open to the public on Monday nights at Ray Purser Hall from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Dixie Bauder, who has been square dancing for 30 years said, “We are recruiting heavily. Some of our older members can no longer dance, that’s why we are welcoming new members.”

Welcoming new dancers to join their group, the Kurly Q’s offer the first three lessons for free.

Purser said, “We’re trying to expand because if our group doesn’t grow, our love of square dancing will not be able to be passed on.”
