- “There is always something new to learn,” Leeds resident Scott Wilson says of technology and social media.
Scott Wilson says the best advice anyone ever gave him is to never stop trying and never stop learning. That’s something he applies to his interest in technology and social media.
A native of Newcastle who has resided in the St. Clair County portion of Leeds since 2006, Wilson explained why he’s fascinated by technology, and the reason he started the website RSS Birmingham.
About technology: “It’s intriguing. No matter what it is, it’s constantly evolving. New technology is coming out every day, whether it’s a new web authoring script, web hosting, new products, new software, or new social media. When I was in my 20s, none of this existed. In a span of a very short time, it’s come this far. Imagine what it will be like the next 20 years and how technology will be used for medical research and space travel. The sky is the limit as far as imagination goes, and I say it’s farther than that.”
Social media and learning: “There are always new things to learn, and social media is one way to learn. Whether it’s Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, or another, you’re constantly exposed to something new and different ways of doing things. You never know it all, and that’s what I really like about it.”
Technology and entertainment: Asked to name his favorite movie, Wilson said it’s a toss-up between “Iron Man” and “Transformers.” “I like sci-fi and special effects, which goes back to computers and how they’re used to make movies today. I was a horror movie fan – ‘The Wolf Man,’ ‘Frankenstein,’ ‘Dracula’ – and the special effects they used back then were really fantastic stuff, but it pales in comparison with CGI.”
RSS Birmingham: Wilson started the website (www.rssbirmingham.net) to showcase local bloggers and the Birmingham metro area. “We keep getting a bad rap here, no matter what, and I wanted to do something to help get rid of the negativity and promote the positive side of the Birmingham area as I see it. There are so many talented people in this area who share their experiences and make it a nice place to live. Keeping the site targeted at the Greater Birmingham area showcases what we, as citizens of Birmingham and its surrounding areas, have to offer those looking to move or build here.”
Why he enjoys living in Leeds: “It’s a smallish community that’s quiet and comfortable. We have close access to major shopping centers, and we’re closer to our kids.”
If he was stranded on a desert island with one meal, one CD, and one book: “The meal would be a steak, baked potato, nice tossed salad, and a bottle of wine. The CD would be Nickelback. I love those guys. I love their music, anyway. The book would be How to Get Off a Desert Island for Dummies.”
