FOOTBALL: St. Clair County High School Saints
Published 2:44 pm Thursday, August 25, 2011
2010 record: 6-4.
Today: The Saints visit Moody to continue a long-standing county rivalry. It will be head coach Alan Lee’s first game since retaking the helm at St. Clair during the summer.
Lee’s history with the Saints: This season begins his third tenure as St. Clair’s head coach. He first coached the Saints in 1992, guiding them to a state championship in 1993.
This year’s senior class: 12 players. “We lost 25 seniors last year, so we have a young team as far as experience goes,” Lee said. “For some of our kids, (tonight) will be their first time playing — for sure the first time starting for some — a high school game. Our goal is to go out and improve each day. We want to be a team that gets better as the year goes on.”
Beyond the game: “I want our players to enjoy playing football and to develop as football players and as young men in our community.”
The Saints’ coaching staff: Lee, head coach, quarterbacks, and running backs; Lance Smith, defensive coordinator; Matt Hicks, defensive line; Brian Alred, defensive backs and secondary; Rodney Cooper, outside linebackers; Marty Caldwell, offensive coordinator; Shannon Slaughter and Carl Mims, offensive line.
“I feel very fortunate to be working with this staff,” Lee said. “The coaches have a lot of experience, and they work hard to get our players ready.”
Players to watch: Offensive linemen Gene Carter and Levi Green, wide receiver and defensive back Mack Dragich, and defensive backs Josh Hardin and Pat Green.
About Moody: “It’s always a big game for us. When I coached here before, we always ended the season with it. Now we’re opening against them. The kids all know each other, and it’s a big rivalry, so I expect it to be a hard-fought game. Coach Brown will have his team ready to play, but our guys will be ready too.”
