Art classes to be held during spring

Area residents are encouraged to get their creative juices flowing this spring with a wide variety of art classes at Artscape Gallery, presented by Council of the Arts, Inc. With everything from wood carving to photography available, there is sure to be something to suit a wide variety of tastes.

Space is limited to about eight students in each class. For more information, contact the instructor, or call 205-884-ARTS.

Wood Carving

Cost: $60 for four weeks, plus material costs

Time: Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Instructor: Tom Goodwin, 205-884-8840

Introduction to woodcarving, including discussion of tools and techniques. Students will complete a project in class.

Painting

Cost: $100 for four weeks, plus material cost

Time: 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. March 5, 12, 19 and 26 (Saturdays)

Learn beginning painting concepts such as composition, color and use of materials. Each week, the instructor will set up various items for students to paint.

Photography

Cost: $125 for five weeks

Time: 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays in late March and early April by demand

Make friends with your camera! this project-based class will show you how to work with natural light, good composition and effective editing techniques for digital photographs.

Photography workshop

Cost: $25

Time: 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. or 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. April 9.

Take better snapshots! Learn the most important techniques and camera basics to change your snapshots into attractive photographs.

Introduction to Lightroom

Cost: $50 for four weeks or  $15 per session

Time: 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursdays, scheduled by demand

Adobe Lightroom is a more affordable alternative to Photoshop. Learn the basics of Lightroom software for digital photography projects.

Floor Cloth Painting

Cost: $65 for two sessions, including materials

Time: 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Tuesday or scheduled by demand

Design and paint your own durable custom canvas floor cloth with guidance from an expert.

Found Object Art

Cost: $75 for four weeks

Time: 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. March 5, 12, 19 , 26 or April 2, 9, 16, 23

Create works of art and recycle at the same time! Learn about this unique art form, see examples of found object art, discover where to find materials and design and create your own piece of art.

Pottery

Cost: $25 per session, including some material

Time: 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday and Saturday

Learn how to work with clay using hand-building techniques to make functional and decorative items such as vases, platters and masks. Includes firing.
