- Alex Nickell, the Class 1A-4A 103-pound state champion, admires his medal.
Alex Nickell and Brian Shockley brought home state wrestling championships for the Green Wave, boosting Leeds to a ninth-place finish in the Class 1A-4A state tournament.
Zac Willis also claimed a state medal, finishing third in his weight class.
The three were among six Green Wave grapplers to qualify for the state tournament, competing along with teammates T.D. Marshall, Taylor Simmons, and Tanner Hunter.
For junior Shockley, it was his third time qualifying for state and his first win. He defeated Hunter Edwards of Dora in a 7-0 decision in the 152-pound championship match, improving his season record to 50-6. It was his third win in as many matches against Edwards this season.
Nickell finished at the top of the 103-pound weight class in his first tournament as a state qualifier. “I’m pretty stoked about it,” he said after defeating Christian Cortez of Weaver, 4-2. The win bolstered the seventh grader’s record to 42-8.
Willis took third place honors in the 119-pound weight class, helping Leeds to a total of 49.5 team points.
