That’s evidently just what the Gadsden State Lady Cardinals were looking for. They offered Miss O’Barr a scholarship shortly after the end of her senior season, and she is expected to sign her intent to play for them this afternoon.
As one of three seniors who led Ashville to a 40-10 record and the Class 3A Final Four this year, she scored 408 kills in 126 games, making 202 digs and 95 blocks.
“I’m proud of my teammates,” the outside hitter said. “I couldn’t have done anything without them and Coach (Dale) Beason and Coach Mattison. They’re really hard on us, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. I’m a better player because of it.”
Miss O’Barr, who also plays varsity basketball and softball for the Lady Bulldogs, said she thrives on the competitive pace of volleyball. “It’s not just a power game. You have to use your mind a lot. You’re constantly having to think about where to place a ball and how hard to hit it.”
The daughter of Carol O’Barr and the late Jerry Wayne O’Barr, she has a 3.5 GPA and plans to study for a career in teaching and coaching.
