Gossett named Athlete of the Year: Zeke Gossett has been selected as the Alabama Sports Festival (ASF) Athlete of the Year for 2010. The 13-year-old Cropwell resident won two gold medals in the inaugural Bass Fishing competition held in June 18-20 at Lake Logan-Martin. “Winning the Alabama Sports Festival Athlete of the Year is very exciting and a big honor,” Zeke said. “I promise I will represent the Alabama Sports Festival very well as Athlete of the Year.” His next tournament will be the Alabama B.A.S.S. Junior State Championship on Sept. 25 at Lake Wheeler.
Moody Volleyball: Moody’s Lady Blue Devils improved to 8-2 with a win (25-14, 25-22) against Jefferson Christian on Monday.
Mary Kate Meadows scored five serving aces, and Ashley Epperson made seven kills.
The Lady Devils played at Altamont on Tuesday and against Ashville and Pennington at 4:45 p.m. today.
Springville Volleyball: Springville’s Lady Tigers (19-7) advanced to the finals of the Lincoln Invitational Volleyball Tournament last weekend.
In pool play, Springville defeated Jackson Olin, Beauregard, and Parkway Christian before ousting Lincoln from the semi-finals bracket to advance to the finals. Mary G. Montgomery edged past the Lady Tigers in three games, 25-22, 22-25, and 21-19.
“Even though we came up a little short, this was our best match of the season,” said coach Warren House. “The girls fought hard on defense, coming up with big play after big play. The team had 50 digs in the match.”
Ashley Shaw and Audrey House had 29 kills each, Tanner Earley had 33 digs, Molly Lindsey made 69 assists, Chelsea Ferguson scored 19 aces, and McKinley Tribble and Danyelle Martin each made eight blocks.
