On Monday Springville offically gave the green light to ink the deal that would allow the city to obtain the 60 acre plot where its sports complex will sit.

For the last four weeks the city has been going “non-stop” after it finally elected to purchase the property, Springville’s attorney Jim Hill said.

Springville borrowed $2.5 million last month for the property’s purchase and installation of fields and facilities. The federal government will reimburse 45 percent of the interest rate on that bond.

The city is putting in $1 million for the property up front, with $50,000 given in earnest to the current owner as well. Springville will soon furnish a road, parking lot and basic facilities at the complex.

Mayor Butch Isley said that the first steps taken will include input from residents involved in youth sports.

He said a town hall meeting will soon be held and input from the community will be taken into the master plan. After that point the next phase of the project will begin.

The complex will first house at least one soccer field, six tennis courts and a football field in its first phase.

“We are going to be asking community assistance on these fields,” Mayor Isley said.

The agreement on the purchase of 50 of the 60 acres is set to close next week. Ten of the 60 acres will be donated to the site by the current owner.

The property is being surveyed before the deal is inked. The outer edges that border the shopping center off I-20 and the rail road tracks at the back of the property will be left untouched and allow a green, buffer zone on the property.

Also on Monday, the city:

* issued an outdoor, open air performance permit for the First Baptist Church’s Fifth Quarter entertainment for Aug. 27th.

* Agreed to purchase a new pump for one of the city’s two water intake/delivery stations at a cost of $3,800.
