Pumas grab silver at state games

- Members of the Pell City Pumas display the silver medals they won during the Alabama State Games. Not in order, the team includes Sergio Alverez Jr., Tyler Ivey, Sloan Smith, Abbie Traylor, Tyler Sumpter, Cailis Bullard, Matthew Richardson, Doug Wilson, Sonny Warren, Morgan Coston, Cole Jahner, Logan Tucker, and Bryan Marbury. Coaches are Sergio Alverez and John Ivey. Ryan Richardson serves as team manager.
Tyler Ivey scored seven goals in four games to help Pell City’s Pumas soccer team claim the silver medal in the 12-and-Under Division of the Alabama State Games.
The Pumas defeated the Moody Soccer Club’s team, which won third-place honors; Helena United, and the Elmore County Impact before tying the Ft. Payne Piranhas.
Game One: The Pumas defeated Moody, 6-3. Ivey and Logan Tucker scored two goals each, and Sergio Alverez Jr. and Morgan Coston each scored one.
Game Two: Ivey scored four goals, and Tucker, Coston, and Tyler Sumpter scored one each as Pell City shut out Helena United, 7-0.
Game Three: The Pumas scored a 4-1 win against the Impact. Alverez, Ivey, Tucker, and Coston provided goals.
Game Four: Pell City and Ft. Payne were both undefeated going in. Coston and Alverez scored the Puma’s two first-half goals. The Piranhas held Pell City scoreless in the second half while kicking in two goal of their own to tie the score. Ft. Payne claimed the tournament victory with a combined score of 29 points, edging out Pell City by one point.
