Odenville summer reading kickoff

The Odenville Library Summer Reading Program had a successful kickoff last week, with the Bama Air Dogs providing entertainment for participants.

Gary Shockley, the Air Dogs’ owner and trainer, brought Wiley and Riptide, both border collies, and, Moby, a four-year-old border bollie-Jack Russell mix.  As the dogs leaped through the air catching the plastic discs thrown by Shockley, it was Moby who stole the show.  His catching and balancing skills along with his playful personality not only demonstrated the training he received, but also the positive outcome from being rescued.

Once the show ended, everyone headed to the civic center for pizza and door prizes.  Winners were Raymond Davis, Evan Kincaid, Andrew Chrisos, Bryantt Jones, MiKayla Bowen, Tia Negron, Antonio Pintoja, Ashton Kincaid and Andy Pintoja.

With more than one hundred children registering for the program and more than 150 books checked out after the show, the community continues to demonstrate its support for the annual program. A trip to the library treasure chest is in store for those children who are registered and who read five or more books per week, during the month of June. Just bring in your reading log and hand it to a library staff member to receive your sticker and to pick a prize.  At program’s end, each child who registered will get a certificate, and on June 30, the McWane Center will be the featured entertainment to celebrate the success of all the readers.

Summer reading programs are a great opportunity to keep children engaged in reading, and helps them keep their minds active during the summer break from school.  The Odenville Library has a large selection of children’s and junior reader books, such as the American Girl Series and the Clifford series, along with many other books from the suggested summer reading lists, and the staff is ready to assist with finding the right book for each child’s interests.  So don’t waste any time, get out of the heat, head to the Odenville Public Library, and happy reading.
