Argo ‘in tune’ with county’s votes

Argo supported all of the county winners in last week’s election — the first time the new Argo Town Hall served as a polling place.

“We’re proud to represent what people in the county want,” said Argo Mayor Paul Jennings. “That was really unique. It shows we’re in tune with the county.”

The Argo Town hall is barely broken in, with only two city council meetings and the “Taste of Argo” under its belt.

During Monday’s council meeting, a big topic of discussion was if the council would consider the idea of purchasing land behind Publix on Deerfoot Parkway for apartments. After input from Fire Chief Mike Platts and councilmen, the council decided to learn more about the costs and legalities involved before making any decisions.

Money continued to be an issue, with a car payment past due and $2,480 due for workers’ overtime pay. To prevent paying so much for overtime, the council decided people seeking overtime must have prior approval.

Jennings appointed three people to create policies regarding the use of the Senior Center and Equipment. He also advised the council about a lawsuit that has been filed for damages to a resident’s lake near the town hall.

The council approved placing employee Tom Suggs on salary, paying $10,000 for an audit, learning more about how to rent out the old town hall, hiring an employee using the DHR new hire program, paying half of the mayor’s cell phone bill, paying $10,000 of the $80,088.13 Argo owes for a Metro Bank road loan and making it mandatory for employees to have direct deposit.

The next city council meeting will be July 12.
