“This was one crazy game,” Springville coach Jeff Smith said of the Tiger’s 62-60 overtime win over Moody Tuesday night. “They jumped all over us and really did a great job of taking it right at us.”
The Blue Devils led 26-16 at the break and 42-32 at the end of the third quarter before the Tigers came storming back in the fourth, scoring 21 points to Moody’s 11, tying the game at 53-53 and sending the game into overtime where the Tigers edged the Blue Devils by two.
“Stephen Gholson made big time free throws in the fourth and overtime and Ty Martin gave us a huge lift on the press to get us close at the end. Josh (Gibson) and Matt (Margavio) carried us offensively all night,” Smith said.
Margavio led the Tigers with 27 points and Gibson followed with 22 points, five steals and five assists.

The Springville Tigers hosted the third ranked team in 5A, Pleasant Grove (20-2), Monday at 2 p.m. in front of a large crowd of students and fell 64-51. The game was a makeup that was originally scheduled for last Thursday but was cancelled due to the weather.
The Tigers (12-8) played well in the first half as Matt Margavio drilled five 3-pointers and had 20 points at the break. Several of Margavio’s 3’s were from several feet behind the line as Spartan defenders slacked off, denying dribble penetration. Springville led by as many as nine in the first quarter and by four, 33-29, at halftime.
The Spartans began to press the Tigers in the third quarter and as most of the students filed out as school ended, the Tigers were down 45-42 heading into the final quarter.
Springville’s three-point deficit quickly turned into ten with five minutes remaining as the Spartans increased their lead and left town with a much tougher win than the score suggests.
Leading the Tigers was Matt Margavio with 30 points. Margavio was an impressive seven of 13 from the 3-point line. Jacob Gibson added nine points.
Springville plays St. Clair County tonight at home. Tip-off is at 5:30 p.m.
