St. Clair event raises $83,000 for domestic violence victims

The theme of the Seventh Annual Purse & Passion St. Clair County Luncheon was “Power of One, Impact of Many,” and the 450 guests joined forces to make quite an impact in the lives of domestic violence victims.

The group raised $82,928 (and counting) at the Aug. 20 event, which was chaired by Blair and Cindy Goodgame and held at The Beacon at Pell City First United Methodist Church. All of the funds will be used to support Our Place, the YWCA Central Alabama’s emergency shelter, and to provide supportive services to victims in St. Clair and Blount counties.

“This community sent a powerful message to women who are fleeing abuse,” YWCA CEO Yolanda Sullivan said. “By giving so graciously, our guests let victims know that they won’t have to face their lowest moments alone. We are so grateful for the tremendous compassion the St. Clair County community has shown.”

Members of the Steering Committee were featured in a video shown at the luncheon and told why they care about the issue of domestic violence.  “I care because I don’t want anyone in our community to live in fear,” Virginia Gauld said. “I care because I grew up in a safe, loving home and I believe everyone deserves that,” said Barbara Fincher.

Also during the event, the YWCA honored Pell City residents Elmer and Glenda Harris for their generosity and compassion. They have devoted much of their lives to serving others and have made a tremendous impact on so many in the community and throughout the state.

The YWCA would like to extend a special thank you to the luncheon’s Steering Committee members and Table Captains, as well as to title sponsor Alabama Power and presenting sponsors Honda Manufacturing of Alabama, LLC and Red Diamond.

Other generous sponsors include: Benjamin Moore Paints; City of Pell City;  Pell City First United Methodist Church; Publix Super Markets Charities; Metro Bank, WKW Erbsloeh North America; Chapel in the Pines; Logan Martin LakeFest, LLC; Mays Bend Ladies Club; Trinity Industries; St. Clair Times; The Daily Home; Hill, Hill & Gossett, P.C.; PNC; Landmark Credit Union; St. Vincent’s Health System; US AmeriBank; First Baptist Church South; Kilgroe Funeral Home; Barnett Jones Wilson, LLC; Butts to Go; Kell Realty; Magnolias Gift Shop; Mary’s Mini Warehouse; Town of Steele; Usrey Funeral Home; Women on Mission, Cropwell Baptist Church; Rhodes Agency – Allstate; The Elmer B. and Glenda S.
