The last meeting between Springville and Moody resulted in a wild, overtime win for the Tigers. This time they played in the county championship and the Tigers got the win, 44-38.
The Tigers beat Ashville and the Blue Devils beat St. Clair County to advance into the championship game.
Springville’s Matt Margavio came out and put on a offensive clinic in the first quarter, hitting three’s mixed in with short and midrange jumpers, while scoring 12 of the Tigers first 14 points.
Springville led at the half, 21-17.
The Tigers maintained a lead throughout the second half and picked up the six-point win.
Margavio led all scorers with 17 points and four rebounds, Brandon Gilliland added seven points and Josh Gibson did all little bit of everything with five rebounds, five points, six steals and three assists.
Rod Wimes scored 12 for Moody followed by Chad Slade and Yates Boykin with five apiece.
VARSITY GIRLS
The Ashville Lady Bulldogs broke away in the final quarter and held off a scrappy Springville squad in the varsity girls’ county championship game for a 51-44 win.
The Lady Tigers held their own in the first half leading 17-16 at the end of the first quarter and 29-23 at the break.
A Bianca Bothwell layup brought the Lady Bulldogs even with Springville, tied at 34-34 with 1:45 left in the third quarter. Springville’s Molly Lindsey quickly broke the tie with a three pointer and headed into the final quarter the Lady Tigers held on to a two-point lead, 40-38.
Taylor Coffee gave Ashville its first lead of the second half after banking one in and making the score 42-40 early in the fourth.
Later, free throws from Bothwell gave Ashville a 50-44 lead with 42 seconds remaining and the Lady Bulldogs held on for the county championship.
Lindsey and Kate Riker paced Springville with 15 points each and Dixie Rhodes added five.
For Ashville, Bothwell scored 13 points, Kim Fuller scored eight and Jenny Howard chipped in seven.
