Inmate escapee found

An inmate who walked away from a St. Clair work detail near Ragland is back in custody.

James Leroy Tyree left a work detail off Hwy. 144 last Tuesday and was captured just after 2 a.m. Sunday by the Cherokee County Drug Task Force after a car chase and foot pursuit.

Tyree had already served 12 years of a 20-year sentence for theft, burglary and robbery. He is now being charged with first-degree escape, felony possession of a firearm, attempting to elude law enforcement and resisting arrest.

He was being held in Cherokee County as of press time.

The driver, 23-year-old Stephanie Nicole Chandler, was also arrested at the scene. She is charged with hindering prosecution, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia
