Purple Devil Squads Beat Victory’s Lions

The Ragland Lady Purple Devils held off the Ashville Lady Bulldogs Monday to win a close one at home, 46-43. Paige Gann had 17 points, 11 rebounds and three steals for Ragland. For Ashville, Kim Fuller scored 15 points; Jacie Tipton and Mara Mattison each had seven. Ragland improved to 4-3 and 2-0 in area play.
Ashville cruised by Ragland Monday with an 80-41 win. Barry Woods had a huge game for the Bulldogs with 34 points. Xavier Newton chipped in 17.
Dec. 5
Ragland jumped on Victory Christian early last Friday, leading 21-4 at the end of the first quarter and never looked back. “This was a good area win for us as we continue to improve as a team,” Purple Devils coach Andy Eden said. The Ragland press forced turnovers early putting the Lions of the game. Jamarcus Embry led Ragland with 18 points, four rebounds and four assists. J.T Caldwell dropped in 11 points with five rebounds. Mason Sanders added nine points, eight rebounds and three assists. The Purple Devils improved to 5-1 after the win.
The Victory Christian Lady Lions led Ragland after one quarter of play last Friday, 11-8. The Purple Devils didn’t waste much time in regaining the lead. They led by seven at the half, 21 after three quarters and won by 24. Solid Ragland defense combined with cold shooting resulted in Victory scoring only one point in the second quarter and four in the third. The Lady Purple Devils continued to force the tempo in the second half and finished off the Lady Lions. For Ragland, Paige Gann led all scorers with 22 points and 17 rebounds. Brook Evans scored eight points and grabbed four rebounds. Emily Church chipped in five points, seven rebounds and three steals. “We came out sluggish in the first quarter but finished strong in the second half,” Ragland coach Rush Rutledge said. The Purple devils shot 20 of 66 from the floor and were 3-3 after the win.
Dec. 4
Ragland defeated Coosa Christian last Thursday, 61-39 at home. Nick Kay scored 15 points; Mason Sanders had 13 points and four rebounds. Jameil Brock contributed ten points, seven rebounds and five assists.
The Ragland Lady Purple Devils rolled Coosa Christian 67-13 last Thursday. Madison Oliver and Emily Church led Ragland with 12 points apiece. Paige Gann scored ten points and added nine rebounds.
Dec. 2
Last Tuesday the Ragland Purple Devils were able to pull out a 52-50 win over the Jefferson Christian Eagles at home.
“Jefferson Christian has a very athletic team,” head coach Andy Eden said. “We did not play so well in the first [half], but we played considerably better in the second. We were able to pull out the win despite being out rebounded.”
Jefferson Christian was up 16-13 by the end of the first, but the Purple Devils came together and tied it up 27-27 at the half. Ragland tacked on another 16 in the third and led 43-36 before the Eagles put up another 14 points to Ragland’s nine in the fourth.
Nick Kay was the top point maker, putting up 18 in that game; Jameil Brock had 12 points, seven rebounds, two steals and seven assists while Mason Sanders had 12 points, four rebounds and one assist.
Last Tuesday the Ragland Lady Devils fell to Jefferson Christian 37-29 at home. “We are playing better, but we are still turning the ball over way too much. We had 26 turnovers tonight,” Ragland coach Rush Rutledge said. Paige Gann led the way with 11 points, six rebounds and three steals.
