Pell City establishes new water procedures

Tuesday night city officials held a meeting for residents still experiencing water issues since they began receiving water from the Coosa Valley water plant in December 2011.

“Our intention is to resolve this issue,” Mayor Joe Funderburg told residents.  “We want this resolved as quickly as you do.”

The city is implementing new procedures for residents requesting water bill adjustments and bottled water.

City Manager Patrick Draper said beginning Friday, residents would only receive bottled water on a case-by-case basis.  Residents will be required to call and request to have their water tested before they can receive bottled water.  Utility bill adjustments will continue through the next billing cycle, which ends in mid February.

“If you plan to put in for a wavier, put in an application early,” Draper said.

Residents wanting water testing need to call city hall at 205-338-3330.

Draper said he has continually reviewed daily reports for the last three to four months.

“It is consistently continuing to improve.”

He encouraged residents still experiencing difficulties to continue to report problems.

“If we don’t know about it, we can’t help,” Draper said.

Many residents complained about foul odor and some are still experiencing problems with discolored water.  They questioned officials about future plans for replacing old pipes.

Byron Woods, an engineer with Municipal Consultants of Birmingham who has been working with Pell City to find solutions, said water is still being tested and analyzed.

“We can’t replace every pipe because of costs.  We will evaluate what we can.  We’ve got some very old infrastructure, and that needs to be addressed.”

Both Woods and Draper emphasized the need to prioritize pipe replacement.

Officials are urging residents wanting water tested residents to call or come by city hall by Friday
