(Column) All About Ashville

A new year is just days away. Many of us are taking down our decorations and planning for New Year’s Eve and the following day. It is a time of much activity. It is also a time to reflect on the year that is ending. Much has happened.

The Ashville Bulldog Bow Tie Theater Company put itself on the map. This was in part due to a grant from CEPA’s Spotlight Kids Theater Organization. There was much effort and contribution from the community not to mention the actors and the effort of Terry Duncan Hipps, Ashville High School math teacher and coordinator for the production of “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.”

After much planning preparation and good old-fashioned hard work, the ribbon was cut on the Museum of Pell City. But don’t let the name fool you. This impressive educational and entertaining establishment celebrates not only all of St Clair County, but the great state of Alabama. Anyone who hasn’t been should go. You can’t beat the price. It’s free.

There have been more athletic successes and athletes who have distinguished themselves in this column than can be counted. However, two have been yet to be mentioned. Ashville’s Abby Smith and Elora White cheered their way into history at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. Very impressive, ladies.

Rep. Lance Bell celebrated his first year in office. When asked what he had learned the senator joked: “I’ve finally figured out where all the bathrooms in the State House are.” But, we know he saw some large tax cuts made and the money put back into our schools.

There is much to remember. However, there is little time to reminisce. Because there is also much on the way.

The Little Art Tree will reopen on Jan. 4. New students are welcome. They are already planning for their big art show in May. Votes for the winner in the gingerbread house drawing contest are due by Jan. 1. Go to the “what’s happening in Ashville” Facebook page and click “like” on your favorite drawing. You will see some impressive work.

Sleep in Heavenly Peace Gadsden has built more than 3,000 beds for kids in need. However there are more than 600 kids still on the waiting list. They are looking for businesses to partner with and schools to sponsor in their Students Building Beds During Class program. Private message the organization to partner, sponsor or volunteer for the program.

There will be a bridal show at The Barn 839 on Jan. 28 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at 735 Co Road in Heflin. Save the date, Blushing Brides. It is never too early to start planning for this occasion.

Have a great week, Ashville. Soon it will be time to start thinking about Valentine’s Day. Although the wisest will think about it now and take advantage of those after Christmas sales.
