For those of you looking to get outside and escape the Summer heat, there is no better option than Yak the Creek, now open to the public. The long, lovely Big Canoe Creek is located on the side of Highway 231 at the bridges just outside city limits and runs seven miles through the greenery. The lush foliage of the woods surrounding Ashville provide merciful shade from the heat during our hot and humid Alabama Summer.

Yak the Creek is a business that rents canoes and kayaks.

According to the kayakers, “It is obvious why this family owned business is successful, they are a pleasure to deal with.”

“The really go out of their way to help their customers,” said another.

The self guided tours are three, five, and seven miles long. It is the perfect way for a family to spend the day away from the television, the computer, their Smartphones and get back to nature.

But the self guided tours are not limited to families. There are plenty of place for fishermen to park their canoes and cast their lines. Large groups are welcome. Their website says they are proud to be part of birthdays, anniversaries and first dates. There are no time limits on the self guided tours. So, visitors can get vigorous exercise with traditional kayaking, find a spot where the fish are biting or take a long, leisurely roll down the waterway: ideal for those first dates!

The creek will be ready and waiting to welcome anyone wishing to spend a day on the water. Operating hours are Saturdays from 9 a.m to 4 p.m., Sundays from 1 p.m. to 4.pm. and during the week by appointment.

For those who bring their own canoes, the charge is five dollars. To rent one for the day, the cost is thirty dollars. Group rates apply to parties over five. Discounted rates are given to the military, police, fire fighters, nurses and teachers. To reserve a kayak, something the people at Yak the Creek suggest, or other questions, call 205-612-2292.
