St. Clair County recently hosted the Alabama State Bicentennial Traveling Exhibit at the Moody Civic Center.  A large part of the exhibit included the St. Clair County Bicentennial Traveling Exhibit, which is celebrating its bicentennial this year.

The State exhibit has moved on to its next location, but the St. Clair County Bicentennial Exhibit will continue to travel through several locations in St. Clair County. Judge Alan Furr, one of the coordinators of the St. Clair County Exhibit, plans to display the county information in cities throughout St. Clair County.

“We want to share the history of our county,” Furr said. “And we want to be sure it is remembered.” Each city within St. Clair County has a history board, which Furr plans to be displayed in the respective cities once the tour is through.

The first stop on the St. Clair County Bicentennial Exhibit is at the Pell City Municipal Complex at 1000 Bruce Etheredge Pkwy. This exhibit will be placed in the lobby area beginning on Friday, May 4 and will be on display through May 25 so that more people have a chance to stop by and view it. Regular hours are 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday; 9 a.m. – 7 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday; and 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. Saturday.

The St. Clair County Bicentennial Exhibit consists of storyboards which provide a glimpse into the early history of St. Clair County. Also on display will be a large topographical map of St. Clair County, which once hung in the old Ashville courthouse and was hand-carved from basal wood in the 70s. The map has recently undergone renovation and this will be the first chance in many years for the public to view this very unique map.
