History was made at Pell City High School last week with the formation of a new Junior Civitan club. The Charter ceremony was held on Nov. 9 with members of area Civitan International clubs in attendance.
“This is the first club to be chartered in the Centennial club and the first junior club sponsored this year,” Scarlet Thompson, the first female Executive Vice President of Civitan International said. “We are excited to honor you as you join nearly 10,000 middle and high school students around the globe.”
Civitan International is an association of volunteer service clubs founded in Alabama in 1917 and celebrated its Bicentennial this year. Since founding, they have continued to grow with more than 40,000 members across North America, Europe, Africa, and Asia. The Junior Civitan and Campus Civitan are the youth and collegiate organizations, with nearly 11,000 members across 350 clubs. Now, Pell City will be added to that number.
The Junior Civitan girls club at Pell City High School was a collaborative effort began by PCHS student Molly Barr, now the President of the PCHS Junior Civitan. Working with the local Civitan International Club, Margaret Seay, and Emily Hodge their Club Builder liaison, they were able to form the PCHS chapter in less than a few weeks.
“We are excited to welcome these girls…they are representatives of high academics, good morals, and good attendance,” PCHS Principal Dr. Tony Dowdy said. “This was a student led opportunity. With the relationship built with the local Civitan chapter, students and adults can do great things in the community.”
Forty-two members were inducted into the all-female club at the ceremony, and they plan to do another membership drive soon. The elected officers inducted during the ceremony are Molly Barr, President, Abby Minor and Margaret Seay, Vice Presidents, Tori Lonergan, Secretary, Morgan Roberts, Treasurer, and Brooke Robinson, Public Relations Coordinator. Faculty advisors for the club are Valerie Curtis and Elizabeth Money.
