Teachers from the Pell City School system received grants to use in their classrooms on Tuesday from the Pell City Schools Foundation.
The foundation awarded grants to teachers throughout the Pell City School system for the 2017-2018 school year. More than 82 grants were awarded to teachers, totally $21,113.86.
“We look for durability,” Holly Murphy, Treasurer of the Pell City Schools Foundation said, “if the grant will make an impact for multiple years, for multiple classrooms, and how many students it will impact.”
Teachers use these grants to enrich their classrooms, anything from new books, learning tools, white boards, science models, or educational board games.
“We want to help fill the void where state funds may fall short,” Murphy said.
The Pell City Schools Foundation was founded in 1992. Since 2014, the foundation has awarded over $76,000 in grants, encompassing nearly 300 requests from elementary through high school teachers.
The Pell City City Council also approved to include an option for donation on the city water bills, where patrons can “round up” their bill, make recurring donations, or make a one-time donation. Murphy said they have seen a good response for this recent program. Money raised funds the grants distributed to Pell City school teachers each year.
