Maybe it was the 3-D printer in his seventh grade science class at Duran South or the collection of marathon metals that hang on the wall behind his desk that helped, but what finalized Principal Dr. Cory O’Neal’s nomination for the Pell City Kiwanis Teacher of the Month was his dedication to teaching.
“Over the past 12 years, I have seen Ross Burks grow,” said Principal Dr. Cory O’Neal. “He has had a tremendous impact on education and he will continue to do that in Pell City. He tries to make a positive impact on every student.”
Dr. Ross Burks, a native of Ragland, has been teaching in Pell City for 13 years; 12 of those years have been at Duran South. He taught physical education in the past and currently teaches life science.
Burks received his Bachelor’s degree from Jacksonville State University. He continued his education, earning his Education Specialist Degree from Samford and Master’s degree from the University of Alabama.
“I really enjoy teaching the kids of Pell City,” Dr. Burks said, surprised at his award. Dr. O’Neal had not told Burks that he was to receive the Teacher of the Month recognition, so he was surprised when they arrived at the Kiwanis luncheon at the Pell City Civic Center last Thursday.
Dr. Cory O’Neal grew up in Key Club and has a long history and knowledge of Kiwanis.
“Thank you Kiwanis for taking the time out to honor our educators,” O’Neal said. “We have a tremendous group of teachers at Duran South.”
Kiwanis Club of Pell City honors a teacher from a different Pell City school each month, presenting them with a plaque and a check for $100 to purchase items for their classrooms.
