Pell City Mayor Bill Pruitt, the Pell City City Council, and City Manager Brian Muenger have proclaimed September 25 as Family Day and September 24-30 Family Week.

“Family Day celebrates simple, everyday things parents do to connect with their kids,” according to the Casafamilyday.org website, which founded the day to encourage more connections and family time between parents and children.

The proclamation given by Mayor Bill Pruitt at the regular city council meeting on Sept. 11 stated, “simple daily activities like sharing a meal, a conversation, or a book can have an enormous impact on the life of a child. Strong and engaged families help build a strong Alabama.”

Family Day was founded in 2001 by the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) as a way to educate parents on how increased involvement with children can help prevent drug use, lower the risk of suicide, school dropout, teen pregnancy, and incarceration. According to statistics, approximately 40,000 Alabama children a year experience court ordered visitation with one parent for only two to six days a month.

CASA wants to help promote the importance of family interaction and connecting with kids throughout the day and week, to stress that children need both parents, and to honor the devotion of parents and recognize their critical role in teaching children positive and healthy behaviors.

“We want to encourage our citizens to join together in observing this week/day by spending time with their families and by engaging in appropriate ceremonies and activities to honor and strengthen both our city’s and state’s families,” Mayor Bill Pruitt stated.
