The Pell City Chamber of Commerce welcomed a new business to the Pell City area. Big River Kennels, located at 1565 Piney Woods Road in Vincent, had a “dog party” grand opening and ribbon cutting on Saturday. The Pell City Animal Control Center was on hand with several adoptable dogs and guests were welcome to bring their dogs to tour the facilities.

Owner Nicole Nitchman Herzog and her husband Derek officially opened Big River Kennels, LLC in January to offer boarding, training, and doggy daycare. They also offer additional options for boarding, such as grooming, nature hikes, pool parties, and “Cookies & Cuddles,” featuring Herzog’s homemade all-natural dog-friendly treats.

“I learned a lot from the first kennel that I worked at,” Herzog stated. “It is important to keep the area pristine, sterilized and disinfected.” She also said that creating a fun atmosphere was better for the dogs.

“I love dogs. They are such good companions and have been such a huge part of our lives forever,” Herzog explained. “This [Big River Kennels] is something that my family can do together.”

Herzog and her family moved to their current location in August 2016 from Smith’s Station. When they purchased the property, it had an existing dog kennel on site, and Herzog knew that it was meant to be.

Big River Kennels offers individual kennels with cots or beds and blankets, or guests can bring their own pet beds and blankets from home. There is a fenced area for the dogs to run. Herzog stated that they take each dog for walks at least four times a day, and there is an option to add a nature hike as well. Rates vary based on days, additional options, and if guests are boarding more than one pet. Doggy day care is available Monday through Friday.

Big River Kennels also has dog training available in monthly dog and owner group classes, individual dog and owner classes, or daycare and overnight dog sessions. They also offer puppy house breaking and training with an overnight stay included.

Standard office hours are Monday through Saturday 8 a.m.-noon and Sunday 2 p.m.-4 p.m. For more information on Big River Kennels, LLC, contact Nicole Nitchman Herzog at (205) 777-8861 or visit www.facebook.com/aCanineCountryRetreat/
