Local ‘stars’ to dance for annual charity performance

- Contestants from last year’s competition glide across the dance floor.
The genre of ballroom dancing surged across America in 2005 with ABC’s hit television show, “Dancing with the Stars.”
Since then, many cities across the country have turned the show into a charity event and coined it, “Dancing with Our Stars,” where local names dance. Pell City has held its own “Dancing with Our Stars” for the past three years and this year it’s happening again.
Held by the Pell City Line Dancers (PCLD), the event has previously supported charities such as Relay for Life and Children’s of Alabama. This year, the proceeds for the event go to a different charity. This year, it will help support the Pell City Fire Department.
“I don’t think most people know everything the firefighters do. I certainly didn’t,” said Dianne Denny, a member of the PCLD. “I knew what they were, but not what it takes to be in the fire department. I thought, ‘they put out fires,’ but it’s so much more than that.”
One of the things the fire department does is a fire science program, a vocational class within the St. Clair County High School system that provides training within the area for students. In order to successfully train students on how to be a firefighter, the department needs safety equipment for the program, which is what a portion of the proceeds for the event will go towards. Equipment needed includes fire training props, fire turnout gear, and general safety items. They will also use a portion of the money to upgrade the drill field.
Some of the stars dancing at the event will be the fire chief and former chief, the high school football coach and Pell City High School football players. They will be dancing with professional dancers and there will be couples competitions throughout the night.
“Last year, people who went said it was a great night out,” said Denny. Dancing with our Stars will be held at Celebrations on Friday, Feb. 17. Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door. Tickets may be purchased at the Pell City Coffee Company or Main Street Drugs or by calling (205) 473-4063. Food will begin being served at 6 p.m. with dancing beginning a 7 p.m.
