Upon exit, ASPCI thanks supporters, announces plans for future work

This letter is to thank all of ASPCI’s supporters over the past 20 years, and especially those who have “been there” for us during our 15 years of managing the Airport Road facility.

The St. Clair County Commission was unwilling to fund our nonprofit at the amount we needed to perform basic impoundment services, so we had no choice but to terminate our contract. This created the situation in which Pell City was forced to terminate both our contract for impoundment services as well as our lease on the Airport Road facility as of Sept. 14, 2015. Therefore, we have been working diligently to place as many of the animals in our care as possible prior to our departure.

August was a wonderful month for us with 63 adoptions and 54 placed with rescues. However, these past two weeks in September have seen an incredible outpouring of support from our staff, volunteers, and rescue partners. During this time, we adopted 33 animals from either the shelter or through our programs at Petsmart in Trussville and Oxford.

Our staff has gone above and beyond during these very tough times to make sure these animals were ready for adoption and transport to rescues. All these animals needed vaccinations, heartworm or feline leukemia tests, and appointments for spay/neuter surgeries.  All of our animals were spayed or neutered before being placed in its adopted home. ASPCI salutes Melissa Hull, Debbie Gibson, Charley Jones, Cindy Porter, Whitney Smith, Erin Layton, Hoyt Kendrick, Judy Dawley, and Lori Marsh for your hard work and commitment to the animals. Words can’t express how grateful we are to all of you. And to our sponsoring vets and the staff at Pell City Animal Hospital – what a wonderful group you’ve been to work with all these years.  Thank You!!

Our volunteers and foster parents have been crucial to our ability to place as many animals in rescues as we have.  The need to have our healthy animals isolated from potentially diseased ones at the impoundment facility can’t be emphasized enough, and we’re so lucky to have individuals and families who have taken on this responsibility for us.

Our rescue partners have taken a total of 82 animals in September. Although too many to name, we have been especially fortunate to work with Neva Webb and Rebecca Harshman of Alabama Rescue Relay which has placed approximately 40 animals for us, and the Atlanta Humane Society which has accepted 25.

All the rescue groups we work with are also committed to ensuring that they are part of the solution to pet overpopulation and not part of the problem, so all these new arrivals will be spayed or neutered before their final placement. Our major rescue partners include Big Fluffy Dog Rescue, Country Livin Pet Rescue, Fluffy Dog Rescue, and Save a Life Pet Rescue.

Our low cost spay/neuter (SNAP) program will continue. It will be funded via direct donations and our can recycling program.  Donations can be mailed to

ASPCI, P.O. Box 566, Pell City, Al, 35125. Certificates can be purchased online at www.aspci.org. Many thanks to Phyllis Day for all she’s done to keep the recycling program going as well as her support for ASPCI and our staff during a very difficult period.

ASPCI will have an unknown and possibly lengthy transition period in which we must make decisions on how we can best serve the animals in our area. Please check our web site for announcements as we move forward.
