Rays from the sun smiled upon the crowd of community supporters at the 20th annual Creek Bank Festival.
Several new events such as the first Mascot Challenge and Sweets Bake Off were added to the line-up of activities.
Receiving the top honor in the taste test, Benna Jean Dowdy was the winner for her prize winning pecan pie. Ashley Pate was first runner-up with her chocolate peanut butter swirl cheesecake and Tami Spires claimed the second runner up spot with her banana nut cake.
The judges delivering these delicious decisions were Mickey Thomason, House Representative Dickie Drake and Moody City Councilman Ricky Parker.
Across the park at the Mascots Challenge 13 competitors representing tater tots to chicken loving cows to ninja meerkats and critters in between picked teams to see who would claim the title of the most marvelous mascot.
Competing in several categories the two teams banded together to become victorious in tug of war, one-legged hop and the race.
Overall the World Victory Church Meerkat took first place for his mascot magnificence while the Higrove Veterinary Care dog took second and Kung Fu Panda came in third.
Canines entering the Creek Bark Pageant received trophies.
The Leeds Fire Department dalmation represented the fire house well while other trophy takers included a greyhound, shih tzus, one doing its own mutt strut and several other fabulous four legged friends.
Julie Ferrell, Leeds/Moody Curves owner, Leeds Area Chamber of Commerce (LACC) ambassador and on the events committee for the 20th Annual Creek Bank Festival said it was definitely a fun day.
“We had a big crowd early this morning for the American Cancer Society 5k and fun run,” said Ferrell. “Had some guys take part in my zumba class. They couldn’t quite shake their hips the right way. It was funny, but glad to have them doing zumba.”
Leeds Jane Culbreth Library director Mondretta Williams and Ginny Edwards library assistant in circulation handed out free books while members of Leeds Lodge #446 were on hand providing the Child Identification Program.
Face painting, dog training and exercises, jump time in the bounce house and handcrafted items were all on hand to ensure a great time was had by all.
Sandra McGuire, LACC executive director, summed it perfectly saying, “It was fun!”
