Helping teen girls fulfill their mission in continuing their education at the next level the LadyBUGS organization recently held its scholarship luncheon.

Awarding two senior girls from Leeds High School (LHS) as well as two senior girls from Moody High School (MHS) $500 scholarships, LadyBUGS honors its commitment “to bring strength and vitality to the Leeds and Moody community.”

Asking three non-partial judges to conduct interviews the four ladies chosen were LHS graduates Chasity Carr and Caitlin Frederick along with MHS graduates Mary Kate Meadows and Hannah Bell.

Judges Sandra Naramore, Jennifer Gray and Candice Hill said it was a tough decision.

“This is an intimidating process. We evaluate their transcripts, attendance—so many factors,” said Naramore. “We really talk to them in depth about their goals and plans.”

Having worked in college admissions, Gray felt she was a bit tough on the girls, but their answers won her over.

“We were incredibly impressed with what the two school systems produced,” said Gray.

Carr and Meadows are headed to the “Capstone” where Carr will attain her Elementary Education degree and Meadows will pursue her Secondary Education degree.

Frederick will be attending the University of South Alabama where she plans to major in nursing, while Bell will seek her photojournalism degree from the University of Montevallo.

“These students well represent these communities,” said Naramore. “Their families should be so, so proud.”

Mary Kate Meadows’ mom, Susan, said her daughter told her not to come to awards day.

“I was so thrilled to learn she received this scholarship,” said Susan. “She texted me a picture of picture of the LadyBUGS certificate. I didn’t know she had even interviewed. This is great!”

Another mom was overheard saying, “This is my third child in college—this really helps.”

LadyBUGS President Donna Coates looks forward to seeing what the future brings to these young women.

“We’re excited to invest in you and in return you invest back into the community,” said Coates.

Fundraising efforts at community events such as Moody Oktoberfest, Leeds’ Creek Bank Festival and the LadyBUGS’ annual spring fashion show afforded the organization to award $2,000 in scholarships.

“We’re thrilled to be able to provide some opportunities to you,” said Coates.

Continuing the spirit of giving Leeds Curves owner Julie Ferrell rewarded the scholarship winners and their moms one free month at Curves.

Commending these young women for their hard work and equipping them with the tools to start their college careers, Gray said, “We wish you much luck and great success.”
