Dreaming big—reading in Odenville

Helping children “Dream Big—Read,” the librarians at Odenville Library hosted an afternoon of story telling.
Tons of people hear some of the greatest stories from those who have had more life experience, such as the elderly; the crowd at Odenville Civic Center was no different as they were entertained by a character named Granny Bell.
Dolled up in her bonnet and books, Granny Bell asked, “Does anybody here like stories?”
The children participating in the summer care after school program offered through the Odenville school system, cheered, “Yeah.”
Going on to talk about Odenville Town Park, Granny Bell asked, “How do y’all like this little town? Did you know there used to be magic in Odenville Town Park?”
Telling tall tales about Jack and his magic beans, which helped him play baseball with the Boston Braves (later called the Boston Beans), a little girl named Toe Pinky who was derived from a Haitian folk tale, an artist who wanted to be a shoe maker named Harry Cappuccino and Gordy Ray who read a book everyday, Granny Bell received laughs and applause.
During a snack break door prizes were given out to lucky ticket holders.
If their name was announced as a winner, numerous kids could be seen saying, “Yeah,” or “Yes,” before going to claim their prize.
Items such as Spiderman comic books, wooden flutes and candy were given out.
Winners Peyton Nicastro of Margaret and Matthew Stewart shared some of their favorite things to do.
“My favorite subject is Science,” said Nicastro.
“My favorite movie is Jumanji, and my favorite book is Benji and my favorite subject is Math because I get A’s,” said Stewart.
Their friend Ty Gulledge added, “My favorite book is Batman, favorite character is Scooby Doo and my favorite Nascar driver is Jeff Gordon.”
Drawing the stories to their end, Granny Bell said, “I can’t believe y’all came. Keep reading and you’ll be smarter than that ole Jack.”
Odenville Library hosts the Atlanta Puppet Company next Thursday, June 28 at 2pm at Odenville Civic Center (across from the library) as the next activity for its “Dream Big Read,” summer reading program.
