Boys placed the folded flags into the flames as the Veterans saluted, showing their respect to the flags as they were put out of service.
Members of Boy Scout Troop 199 of Pell City gathered on the Pell City Courthouse lawn, just an hour before the screening of Hell and Back Again. Three men from Veterans of Foreign Wars; Paul Wright (Chaplin), Al Marrow (Quarter-Master), and Tom Miller (Senior Vice Commander) were present to oversee Troop 199 in their flag retirement ceremony.
This ceremony falls in accordance with United States Code Title 4, Chapter 1: “The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.”
The Boy Scout Troop included many young boys to help with this event. While Brandon Turner, Bradley Turner, Jeremy Dudley, Matthew Braden, Will Treadwell and Jonathan Kay assisted in properly folding the flags for retirement; three of the boys were putting the flags into the fire: Will Treadwell, Tyler Newcomb and Matthew Braden.
