American Legion Post 170 in St. Clair County has selected Jay Mattison, a student at Ashville High School, to participate in the upcoming American Legion Boys State program, a week-long intensive education program of government instruction for high school students.

Alabama Boys State will be held the week of June 10-16.

It is a participatory program where each participant becomes a part of the operation of his local, county and state government

At American Legion Boys State, participants are exposed to the rights and privileges, the duties and the responsibilities of a franchised citizen.  The training is objective and practical with city, county and state governments operated by the students elected to the various offices.  Activities include legislative sessions, court proceedings, law enforcement presentations, assemblies, bands, chorus and recreational programs.  High school juniors are selected by local American Legion posts. Mentoring of youth is one of the Four Pillars of The American Legion.

Mattison is number 1 in his class and has a GPA of 4.15.  He is hoping to going to University of Alabama.
