Players have a question for head coach David Shores during a recent afternoon practice.

2010 record:  4-6.

Last week’s jamboree:  Pell City defeated Grissom, 31-12.  “Overall I was pleased,” new head coach David Shores said.  “We made a few mistakes here and there, but we’ll clear those up.  As a jamboree, it couldn’t have gone any better.”

Friday:  The Panthers host Shelby County at Pete Rich Stadium.  Although the Wildcats lost their jamboree game 17-0, Shores described as “physical.  They love to hit.”

This year’s senior class:  32 players, including eight returning starters on defense.

What fans can expect:  “We’re going to compete for four quarters in every game.  If you play harder and smarter than the other guy, you’ll come out on the right side.”

Shores on players to watch:  Receiver and cornerback Justin Morgan.  “He’s our most dynamic player.  He’s explosive and fast, and he’s already had offers from Southern Illinois, Navy, and Jax State so far.”

Defensive lineman Skylar Smith:  “He’s a very good student with a good chance to sign with a college.  He’s one of the strongest guys on our team.  He plays the game the way it’s supposed to be played.”

Linebacker and fullback Russell Peters.  “He’s a guy who has a chance to go to the next level and get some playing time.

Strong safety Alex Ennis.   “We expect big things out of him this year.  He’s physical and plays hard.”

Casey Bishop, a sophomore starting at wide receiver and tight end.  “He’s 6’3.5” and 185 pounds.  He has the chance to be a Division I tight end by the time he’s a senior.”

Shores’ goal for the season:  “To create a stir.  I want to restore a lot of the pride and tradition that has been associated with this team for so long.  It may not be a 10-win season, but it can still be special.”
