Riverside one cent tax imposed June 1

Riverside consumers will begin paying an extra penny per dollar in sales taxes beginning June 1.
The town council unanimously approved a one-percent rate increase earlier this month, making Riverside’s rate uniform with neighboring municipalities, according to Mayor Rusty Jessup.
“All of us in Riverside have been used to paying 10 cents on the dollar for a long time. Pell City and Lincoln have been that way for a while, and it’s not a big step for us to follow suit,” he said.
Following their next meeting on Tuesday, council members are expected to begin seeking bids for a new gasoline pump at the pier at Riverside Landing. Bids are also expected to be solicited for use of the boathouse at the landing.
“We’d like to have it leased by April 1 or May 1,” Jessup said. “It’s a small space that would be good for a seasonal weekend set-up like a bait shop or ice cream stand. We’re not looking for a lot of money here. We just want to see it used.”
