Two men charged with murder during a 2010 robbery pleaded guilty to manslaughter Monday.
Duel Wayne Pope, 22, of Leeds and 21-year-old Nicholas Bell of Trussville both pled guilty in the death of a burglary accomplice, Joseph Robert Denton, 18, of Moody.
On Feb. 11, 2010, Denton was shot and killed by a homeowner after he, Pope, Bell and two other men broke into a home armed with baseball bats and attempted to rob the resident.
Both Pope and Bell pled to manslaughter instead of the original murder charge as part of plea agreements.
Assistant District Attorney Lamar Williamson said the two were given 20-year sentences, with Pope serving three years in the community corrections program with the remaining 17 years on probation.
Bell, who was ordered by Circuit Judge Jim Hill to begin his sentence Friday, will spend his first year of his sentence in the Teen Challenge program, two year in community corrections and 17 years probation, Williamson said.
Earlier in February another accomplice in last year’s home invasion, Mark Lyle Massey Jr, 20, of Trussville, also pleaded guilty to manslaughter in connection with Denton’s death.
