Chris Miller sizes up his opponent at the beginning of the 125-pound state championship match. He pinned Matthew Smith in just under six minutes.

Boasting two state champions, one runner-up, and four medalists, the St. Clair Saints have claimed their first Class 1A-4A state wrestling title.

The Saints entered the state tournament at Huntsville with the momentum from winning the sectional team championship.  Saturday’s win was the school’s first state title in any sport since the Saints brought home a football championship almost two decades ago.

Chris Miller, the sectional tournament’s most outstanding wrestler, and Jerome Jefferson won individual championships in their weight classes.  Miller (44-6) pinned Matthew Smith of Walter Wellborn in 5:57 in the 125-pound weight class, while heavyweight Jefferson (25-2) won a 5-4 decision against Antonio Weaver of the Alabama School for the Blind.

Steven Lindsey (35-8) finished as runner-up in the 112-pound division, losing a 13-8 decision to Stephen Kwan of St. James.

Also helping St. Clair to a team total of 110 points were James Bass, third place, 130; Mack Dragich, fourth place, 145; Nick Busby, third place, 171; and Josh Hardin, 189.
