St. Clair County’s Fighting Saints defeated Childersburg, 41-19, last Friday, although the win capped what coach Charlie Boren described as a disappointing season.

“We’re glad we had the opportunity to go out on a good note, but it’s still disappointing,” he said of the Saints’ 6-4 finish.  “We felt like we were a point away from being the best team in the region, and here we are not being in the playoffs.”

St. Clair racked up 535 yards of total offense against Childersburg, with quarterback Tez Goldsby accounting for 297.  He completed eight of 15 passes for 207 yards and two touchdowns; Damian Lee caught both scoring throws.  Goldsby also ran for 90 yards on seven carries, bringing his season rushing total of 1,113 yards.

Besides his two touchdown receptions, Lee also scored on an eight-yard run. Jonah Lee provided the Saints’ remaining score while rushing for 88 yards on 13 carries.

Sequoah Humes was the game’s leading rusher with 120 yards.

Despite their winning record and impressive finish against the Tigers, Boren said it was a 14-7 mid-season loss against region opponent Oneonta that squelched the Saints’ playoff hopes.

“If we’d won that game, we’d have been in second place, regardless of what happened the rest of the season.  We left 31 points on the board, outrushed them 360 to 180 yards, and just never seemed to be clicking.  That loss more than anything else determined the way the season went for us.”
