Argo to make tough decision on Trussville apartments

The Argo Town Council, except an absent Steve Medori, met to discuss the possible fire coverage of Parc Place Ridge Apartments at Deerfoot Parkway on Tuesday.
There were no votes or decisions made, but the council brainstormed and gathered information about the costs involved.
“This is a business decision,” Mayor Paul Jennings said. “If it’s going to be a good thing for the people of Argo, we might go through with it.”
To provide fire coverage to the apartments, Fire Chief Mike Platts said the Argo Fire Department would need a ladder truck, which costs about $700,000 new, and truck equipment, which is about $85,000. They also would need to double their fire staff, adding another $300,000 to the pricetag.
“If we do this, we need to do it right,” Jennings said.
Jennings talked with Trussville Mayor Gene Melton to discuss his thoughts on the apartments and fire coverage.
“We don’t want to do anything to hurt Trussville,” Jennings said.
Melton wrote a letter to the council making a request for Argo to “respectfully decline” the proposal because the land is “geographically in Trussville.” He said he hopes Trussville and Argo can continue to work together.
“Anything we do to move forward with this is going to stress our relationship with Trussville,” Jennings said.
Their relationship with Trussville is not the only thing being stressed. Argo is one of the many towns that has felt the budget strains from the current economy.
“We’re trying to survive,” said councilman Herschel Phillips. Argo will be about $100,000 short at the end of this fiscal year. The council will continue to weigh out the pros and cons to make a decision.
“We might not please everybody, but we’re trying to do what’s best,” Jennings said.
