Seven juveniles have been charged with vandalizing a Pell City cemetery and school.

During the July 4 holiday weekend, it is alleged that the teens, all males aged 13-16, broke into Iola Roberts Elementary School off Highway 231 and destroyed property there and did $15,000 to $17,000 in damage at the Oak Ridge Cemetery across the highway.

The teens are each charged with first-degree criminal mischief and third-degree burglary. Five of the youth are from Pell City, one is from Leeds, and one is from Vincent, Pell City detective Jonathan Swiney said.

Detective Swiney said that $2,000 in property was stolen from school, including electronic and sound equipment and various school supplies. The teens also allegedly set a $600 rug on fire.

Some of the property was recovered, Swiney said, but some was disposed.

Iola Roberts has been undergoing a renovation from the inside out while school is out for the summer.

Someone alerted authorities after a $2,000 reward was offered by the Oak Ridge Cemetery Association Board for information leading to an arrest and conviction, Detective Swiney said.
