Children await the show put on at the Odenville Civic Center

With smoke from liquid nitrogen filling the air, young readers of all ages came to the Odenville Civic Center to celebrate the end of the summer reading program.

More than 66 attendees were present to watch Tiffany Bishop, Outreach Coordinator for the McWane Science Center, conduct interactive experiments for all to enjoy.  Known as the Three Ring Science show, one of the experiments involved carefully immersing a balloon in liquid nitrogen.

To the sounds of the children shouting “it’s going to pop!!” the balloon began to deflate much to the oohs and ahs of the audience.  As they continued to watch, the balloon was removed from the liquid nitrogen, and slowly re-inflated.

The program was a great opportunity for children to learn about science, while having fun.   Other experiments involved the use of Alka Seltzer and Mento’s, and the reaction that occurs when each is combined with various liquids.

As the children ducked for cover, the Alka Seltzer solution shot the top off a small film case, and those sitting in front found out just how exciting these experiments are.  Once the show concluded, door prizes were drawn, and food and refreshments served.

All of the participants received a certificate showing their successful completion of the reading program.

As another summer reading program ends, the library staff is thrilled with the continued and increased community participation.
