Eight players and one coach from St. Clair County have been named to the 2010 Alabama Sports Writers Association’s All-State Softball Teams.

Ragland’s Jonathan Nix was named Class 1A Coach of the Year, and sophomore catcher Emily Church was named Class 1A MVP and Hitter of the Year.  Three other Ragland players – senior Reagan Campbell, sophomore pitcher Sommar Wright, and sophomore shortstop Madison Oliver – were also selected for All-Star honors.

Nix led the Lady Purple Devils to a 38-9 season and the state championship in his first year at Ragland.  Miss Church ended the season with 22 home runs, 98 RBIs, and a spot on the state All-Tournament Team.

Catcher Lexi Lawley was chosen for the Class 6A All-State Team as a designated hitter.  The former Lady Panther said she was watching an NCAA softball World Series game on television when coach Terry Isbell called to tell her about the award.  “I didn’t believe it.”

Off to play for Gadsden State Community College this fall, Miss Lawley had a .428 batting average her senior season, hit 15 home runs and 26 doubles, and batted in 54 runs.

Springville’s Savanna Hennings, who will pitch for Jacksonville State University in the fall, was named to the Class 5A All-State Team.  A standout throughout her high school career, Miss Hennings, is a state record holder for the most innings pitched in a single game (19).

Leeds pitcher Laci Driggers was named to the Class 3A Team as a utility player.  She has signed to play for Wallace State Community College.  Upcoming senior Shelby Jo Ashley selected as an all-state honorable mention at third base.
