Moody Police Chief Johnny Kile got word this week that he will have to resign his position at Moody Police Department before taking office with the Leeds City Council.

He will, however, remain with the department until he retires in January said Mayor Joe Lee.

Lee explained that the State Attorney General’s opinion in 2002, bar any person from being a police chief in one city and a council member in another. The case law was brought to the City Attorney’s attention earlier this week and Kile was notified at that time.

Kile beat Cary Kennedy in a runoff for District five earlier this month and is scheduled to be sworn in on Monday.

Lee stated that Kile had been with the police force for 26 years and previously worked for the Mountain Brook Police Department. He added that Kile was appointed the police chief position under his term as mayor and that he had done a great job with the Moody Police Department.

Captain David Higgins will act as Police Chief until a decision is made as the filling the position said Lee.
